Where to Go in February in the USA
February is a great month for combining winter scenery, warm-weather escapes and some of America’s most memorable cultural events. From the celebrations of New Orleans to desert landscapes in California, it is a month that rewards travellers who choose their destination well.
New Orleans, Louisiana
Why go in February
February is when New Orleans comes alive for Carnival season. The city fills with music, parades and a festive energy unlike anywhere else in the USA. Beyond the celebrations, there is time to explore the French Quarter, hear live jazz on Frenchmen Street and enjoy the city’s exceptional Creole cuisine.
How to plan it
Fly into Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport, around 30 minutes from the French Quarter. Three or four nights is ideal, though dates around Mardi Gras should be planned well in advance.
Where to stay
Hotel Monteleone is a classic choice in the French Quarter, while The Roosevelt New Orleans offers a grander stay close to the city’s leading restaurants and historic sights.
Aspen, Colorado
Why go in February
February is one of the best months for skiing in Aspen, when the mountains are covered in snow and the town has its most glamorous winter atmosphere. There are four mountains to explore, excellent private ski instruction and plenty of inviting restaurants for a long lunch or relaxed evening after skiing.
How to plan it
Fly into Aspen/Pitkin County Airport, or arrive through Denver and continue by private transfer. A stay of five to seven nights gives you time to ski at a comfortable pace and enjoy the town.
Where to stay
The Little Nell is Aspen’s most sought-after ski-in, ski-out hotel, while Hotel Jerome is a beautiful choice for travellers who prefer historic character in the heart of town.
Palm Springs, California
Why go in February
Palm Springs offers a complete change of pace from winter. Days are usually sunny and pleasant, making it ideal for relaxing by the pool, playing golf or exploring the desert landscapes around Joshua Tree National Park. The city’s mid-century architecture, restaurants and laid-back style make it an easy addition to a California itinerary.
How to plan it
Palm Springs is around two hours by road from Los Angeles, or can be reached via Palm Springs International Airport. Three nights is enough for a restorative break, while a longer stay can include Los Angeles, Santa Barbara or the California coast.
Where to stay
Parker Palm Springs is a stylish resort choice with lush gardens and a private feel. For a more contemporary stay, the Ritz-Carlton Rancho Mirage offers sweeping views across the Coachella Valley.
