Where to Go in January in the USA
January offers two very different sides of the USA: snowy mountain escapes in the West and warm, easy-going days by the coast. For a winter holiday with a clear sense of place, we would focus on three destinations that each work beautifully at this time of year.
Deer Valley & Park City, Utah
Why go in January
January is one of the best months for a ski stay in Park City. The slopes are in excellent condition, the mountain scenery is at its most dramatic and Deer Valley offers a more polished, relaxed style of skiing. Away from the slopes, enjoy snowshoeing, a spa afternoon or dinner along historic Main Street.
How to plan it
Fly into Salt Lake City, then take a private transfer to Park City in around 45 minutes. Four to six nights is ideal for a comfortable ski break.
Where to stay
The St. Regis Deer Valley and Montage Deer Valley are both excellent ski-in, ski-out options with beautiful mountain settings and attentive service.
Miami, Florida
Why go in January
Miami is a welcome escape from winter, with warm days, clear skies and a lively but relaxed atmosphere. Spend time on South Beach, explore Wynwood and Little Havana, or take a private boat across Biscayne Bay for views of the skyline and waterfront homes.
How to plan it
Miami is easily reached by direct flights from many US and international cities. Stay three to four nights, or continue south to the Florida Keys for a longer coastal journey.
Where to stay
The Setai and 1 Hotel South Beach are ideal for a refined beachfront stay, close to restaurants, the ocean and Miami’s energy.
Maui, Hawaii
Why go in January
January is a lovely time to visit Maui, with warm weather, lush landscapes and the chance to see humpback whales offshore. It is perfect for slow days on the beach, scenic drives, snorkelling and sunset dinners by the ocean.
How to plan it
Fly into Kahului Airport and stay for at least five nights to enjoy the island at an unhurried pace. Maui can also be combined with Oahu or Kaua‘i.
Where to stay
Wailea is a beautiful base for a luxury beach escape, with the Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea and Andaz Maui among the area’s strongest choices.
