Experience San Francisco, USA

San Francisco

San Francisco is a city with layers of history and a character all its own. Spanish roots, Gold Rush stories, waves of migration and the resilience shown after major earthquakes have shaped a place that feels both historic and constantly evolving.

Built across a series of steep hills between the Pacific Ocean and San Francisco Bay, the city is made for exploring. One moment you may be riding a cable car past colourful Victorian homes; the next, walking along the waterfront with views of the Golden Gate Bridge. Its neighbourhoods are just as memorable, from the murals and Latin-American flavours of the Mission District to Japantown and the lantern-lined streets of Chinatown.

There is plenty to see beyond the headline attractions. Take a ferry to Alcatraz, sail beneath the Golden Gate Bridge, spend an afternoon in Haight-Ashbury or enjoy fresh seafood by the water at Fisherman’s Wharf. San Francisco rewards visitors who take their time and wander.

“San Francisco always surprises me. The famous sights are exceptional, but it is the smaller neighbourhoods, local food spots and unusual experiences such as sailing on the bay that make a visit feel truly personal.”

Things to see and do in San Francisco

Visit Alcatraz Island

A short ferry ride from Fisherman’s Wharf takes you to Alcatraz, the rocky island once home to one of America’s most famous federal prisons. The former prison held some of the country’s most notorious inmates and remains a fascinating place to explore.

The self-guided audio tour brings the prison to life through stories from former guards and prisoners. You can walk through the cell blocks, showers and exercise yard, then step outside for remarkable views back towards the San Francisco skyline. The island also has a wider history, having served as a military fort and later become the focus of a Native American occupation.

Walk or cycle across the Golden Gate Bridge

The Golden Gate Bridge is San Francisco’s defining landmark, its red-orange towers rising above the narrow entrance to the bay. While it can be admired from many viewpoints, walking or cycling across it gives you a real sense of its scale.

A guided cycling route often begins at Fisherman’s Wharf and follows the waterfront past the marina, Crissy Field and the Presidio before reaching the bridge. From the far side, enjoy the views from Vista Point, then continue downhill to Sausalito. This elegant bayside town is ideal for a relaxed stroll, a coffee or a browse through its galleries before returning to the city by ferry.

Explore Fisherman’s Wharf and Pier 39

Fisherman’s Wharf is lively, colourful and unmistakably San Francisco. The waterfront is filled with seafood restaurants, cafés, small attractions and views across the bay. It is a good place to try a bowl of clam chowder served in a sourdough bread bowl or simply watch the boats come and go.

At nearby Pier 39, the resident sea lions are the main attraction. They gather on the floating docks in large numbers, barking, resting in the sun and occasionally sliding back into the water. The pier can be busy, but it is a fun stop for families and first-time visitors.

Discover Chinatown

San Francisco’s Chinatown is the oldest in North America and remains one of the city’s most atmospheric neighbourhoods. Enter through the Dragon Gate and wander streets filled with traditional bakeries, tea shops, colourful markets and family-run restaurants.

It is a wonderful place to pause for dim sum, browse for gifts or simply absorb the energy of the area. Step away from the busier streets and you may find quieter corners such as Portsmouth Square, where local residents gather to play cards, practise tai chi or chat with friends.

Sail on San Francisco Bay

Seeing San Francisco from the water offers a completely different perspective. A sailing trip on the bay brings you close to the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz and the city skyline, with the wind and changing light making every journey feel different.

For something more hands-on, you can join the crew aboard a racing yacht. Guests are welcome to take part in the sailing or simply relax on deck and enjoy the views. It is a memorable experience for couples, families or anyone looking for a more active way to explore the bay.

See Lombard Street

Known for its famously winding section, Lombard Street runs down a very steep hill in the Russian Hill neighbourhood. Its eight tight bends are lined with landscaped gardens and flowers, creating one of the city’s most photographed scenes.

The best way to experience it is on foot. Walk up the steps beside the road and, once at the top, take in the sweeping views across San Francisco Bay and the rooftops below.

Ride a historic cable car

San Francisco’s cable cars are more than transport they are part of the city’s identity. Their distinctive bells and open sides make travelling between neighbourhoods an experience in itself.

The remaining lines connect key areas including Fisherman’s Wharf, Chinatown, Union Square and Nob Hill. It may not be the quickest way to get around, but standing on the running board as the car climbs one of the city’s steep hills is a classic San Francisco moment.

Experience Haight-Ashbury

Haight-Ashbury is forever linked with the counterculture of the 1960s and the Summer of Love. Musicians, artists and free spirits helped turn this neighbourhood into a symbol of a changing America, and its independent spirit remains today.

Explore its vintage clothing stores, record shops, bookshops and relaxed cafés, then stroll past the colourful Victorian homes that give the area so much charm. Nearby Buena Vista Park is a peaceful spot for a walk and offers elevated views over the city.

Best time to visit San Francisco

San Francisco can be visited year-round. The warmer months, generally from late spring to early autumn, are ideal for walking, cycling and sailing, although coastal fog is common especially in summer. It often clears later in the morning, revealing bright blue skies.

Autumn is often one of the most pleasant times to visit, with mild weather and fewer crowds. Winter brings cooler temperatures and occasional rain, but it is also a quieter time to enjoy the city’s restaurants, museums and neighbourhoods.
