It depends on which part of the Grand Canyon you mean. The West Rim (Grand Canyon West, home of the glass Skywalk) is about 125 miles from Las Vegas, roughly a 2.5-hour drive. The South Rim, inside Grand Canyon National Park, is about 280 miles away, roughly 4.5 hours. The North Rim is about 270 miles and 4.5 hours, but it is only open from May 15 to October 15 and has no lodging in 2026.
Most people asking this question want the South Rim and don't know it yet. The West Rim is closer, and you can do it in a day. The South Rim has the views from postcards.

West Rim: the closest, and not a national park
Grand Canyon West is on the Hualapai Reservation, not in the national park. That matters in three ways. Your America the Beautiful pass does not work there. Tickets are sold by Grand Canyon West, with general admission and the Skywalk priced separately, and prices change with demand, so check grandcanyonwest.com for the day you want. And the rules are the tribe's: you cannot take your own phone or camera onto the Skywalk, so photos there come from the staff photographers.
The Skywalk is a horseshoe-shaped glass walkway that sticks out about 70 feet past the rim at Eagle Point, with the canyon floor around 4,000 feet below. It opened in 2007. Guano Point, a few minutes away by shuttle, has the wider view of the Colorado River and is the part we like better.
On the way you pass Hoover Dam, about 35 miles from the Strip. Pull off at the Mike O'Callaghan-Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge and walk out on the pedestrian path; it is the best view of the dam face.

South Rim: farther, and the one worth the drive
The usual route is US-93 south to Kingman, I-40 east to Williams, then AZ-64 north to the park. Allow 4.5 hours each way without stops, which is nine hours in the car for a day trip. It can be done, but you get the canyon at midday when the light is flattest and you leave before sunset.
What works better is one night at the South Rim. Arrive in the afternoon, watch sunset from Hopi Point or Mather Point, and spend the next morning on the Rim Trail or Desert View Drive. Then either drive back to Vegas or carry on toward Sedona and Phoenix (the South Rim is closer to Phoenix, and our Grand Canyon from Phoenix guide covers that half).
That is the route our Road to Santa Monica tour takes in reverse: Grand Canyon and Williams, then old Route 66 through Seligman and Kingman to Las Vegas.
Helicopter or drive?
Helicopter tours from Las Vegas fly to the West Rim, and some land at the canyon floor. A round trip is roughly three to four hours including the flight over Hoover Dam and Lake Mead. They cost much more than driving but save a whole day of the trip. Helicopter tours over the South Rim leave from Tusayan, near the park entrance, not from Vegas.
2026 fees and rules
At the South and North Rims, US residents pay the standard park entrance fee or use the $80 annual pass. Since January 1, 2026, visitors from outside the US pay a $100 per-person surcharge at Grand Canyon National Park, or can buy a $250 nonresident annual pass, which also covers Zion, Bryce Canyon, Yosemite and the other parks on the surcharge list. Grand Canyon West has its own separate tickets either way. Current national park prices are on the NPS fees page.
One small thing that catches people out: Arizona does not use daylight saving time. From March to early November, Grand Canyon time matches Las Vegas. In winter, the canyon is one hour ahead, so a 9 a.m. tour slot there is 8 a.m. in Vegas.
FAQ
How far is the Grand Canyon from Las Vegas by car?
About 2.5 hours to the West Rim and about 4.5 hours to the South Rim.
Which part of the Grand Canyon is closest to Las Vegas?
The West Rim (Grand Canyon West), about 125 miles away. It is run by the Hualapai Tribe, not the National Park Service.
Is the West Rim or South Rim better?
The South Rim, for the views and the national park experience. The West Rim is better if you only have one day and want the Skywalk.
Can you see the Grand Canyon in one day from Las Vegas?
Yes. The West Rim is an easy day trip. The South Rim is possible in a day but makes for about nine hours of driving.
Is the North Rim open from Las Vegas?
Only from May 15 to October 15, and in 2026 there is no overnight lodging there after the 2025 Dragon Bravo Fire destroyed the Grand Canyon Lodge.
